I’m not going to attempt a narrative of 2020, instead here are two blog posts; one urban, one rural featuring my personal favouite images of the year.

All of the shots below are taken in Bristol during 2020.

Foggy city scene with cranes and a distinctive concrete tower rising above red-brick offices, a flock of birds flying through a hazy golden-pink sky.

The shot tower

Quiet, sunlit curved street with empty road, double yellow lines, small historic shopfronts including Heritage House, brick buildings and a Pay & Display sign.

Behind the Triangle

Quiet city street lined with Victorian red-brick shops and pubs, a large church on the right, leafless plane trees and scaffolding on one building — almost empty of people.

Baldwin Street (first lockdown)

A handmade banner with a red heart and 'NHS' hangs from a lamppost, framed by ribbons, overlooking a quiet high street with parked cars and traditional buildings.

❤️ NHS

Street scene outside Bristol Beer Factory tap room, a bright pink mural with simpsons cartoon figures, people and bicycles on the pavement beneath a red-brick industrial building.

Queueing at Mark’s Bread on North Street

Black-and-white street scene with a handwritten note on a bus-stop panel: 'The more responsible we are, the sooner we'll get through this. #stayathome', quiet pavement and buildings.

#StayAtHome

Black and white street scene of a UK city with classical stone buildings, a clock-topped colonnaded facade, lampposts and a few pedestrians and cyclists.

The Clifton Triangle

Steep Bristol street lined with terraced houses and parked cars, colourful bunting overhead, view extending to houses on the green hillside.

Bedminster Bunting

Terraced houses on a sunny street with a Pride flag on one home and two St George's flags on neighbours; cars parked along the road.

Flags 🏳️‍🌈 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Empty street plaza with a traditional two-storey pub on the right, parked cars and modern apartment blocks in the background under a pale blue sky.

The Ship, Redcliffe

Curving elevated footbridge with graffiti-covered pillars spans a misty grassy park, flanked by scattered trees.

Cumberland Basin fog

Two pink billboards reading "COMMUNITY IS STRENGTH." and "COMMUNITY IS KINDNESS." stand on a grassy verge beside a quiet road, backed by a large tree.

Community is Strength, Community is Kindness

Urban street scene: a small pink car parked by a red-brick building marked 'ORYX', with modern flats and a stone church under a cloudy sky.

Pink Suzuki

Stone archway into a courtyard framed by brick buildings, with people socialising; a man leans on the wall asking, 'Spare £6 for a glass of craft ale guv?'

Paste up graffiti at the Old Brewery, Southville

Quiet cobbled street lined with red‑brick buildings and trees, a red TNT delivery van parked near modern offices on a sunny day.

Lone TNT Van in the centre

Round sticker reading 'CANCEL BREXIT' in white on black with red bars, stuck to a black lamppost; blurred trees and houses in the background.

Cancel Brexit

Multi-storey building under construction with exposed steel frame and scaffolding, beside brick office blocks and a tall concrete tower, cars passing on the road in front.

New Build on Temple Way

Autumn street scene: bright yellow trees by a red-brick building with blue metal structure, pedestrians and a cyclist at a crossroads as a car drives past.

The Galleries Shopping Centre

Sunlit autumn scene by a stone wall reading 'St Peter and Paul', fallen leaves on steps and pavement, a parked red e-scooter beneath golden trees.

Clifton Cathedral

Urban scene: high-rise tower under construction with crane beside a red-brick One Castlepark building, autumn trees and a grey overcast sky.

New Build – Castle Park

Black-and-white scene of a lone walker on a sunlit park path, long shadows across grassy mounds, bare trees above and cranes and buildings on the skyline.

Winter in Castle Park

Black-and-white night scene of a riverside with tall streetlights and their starburst reflections in still water, silhouetted buildings and trees under a misty sky.

Pre-dawn on Cumberland Basin

Row of colourful terraced shopfronts at dusk — 'Localz Store' with a green facade beside a kebab takeaway, flanked by older brick and stucco buildings and an empty street.

Old Market

Corner laundrette at dusk, glowing interior with washing machines; a person with an umbrella enters along the rain‑slick pavement.

Cotham Launderette

Black-and-white underpass with graffiti-covered pillars, a curved path, benches and bins, and misty trees beyond, creating a moody urban scene.
