The other evening Richard Ford and I headed out to explore Aust in South Gloucestershire – site of the original Severn Bridge crossing from England into Wales. I’d seen Richard’s shots of the old Severn View Services building (once the site of the largest public cafeteria in the UK, but now an insurance call centre) previously on Instagram and was keen to get out there and have a wander around.

Suspension bridge silhouetted against a golden sunset, its tall towers and cables spanning a tranquil landscape with trees in the foreground.

Barriers on the Severn Bridge footpath

Empty road with white barriers and a tall blue lamppost beside a small gated crossing, backed by a grassy green hill under a cloudy sky.

Hut on the bridge

Long bridge stretching across calm sea at dusk, a thin pale horizon beneath brooding grey clouds, with faint power lines cutting the sky.

Black-and-white scene: a tall electricity pylon and silhouetted trees set beneath a dramatic, cloud-filled sky over flat fields.

Gateway and the mighty Aust Pylon

Golden sunset over a rural field, silhouetted trees and a tall electricity pylon with power lines across the sky.

Pylon and windswept landscape

Vivid sunset paints the sky purple, pink and gold above a silhouetted suspension bridge, power pylons and trees on the horizon.
